He founded the Medical Society of London in 1773, as well as establishing or supporting numerous charities. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1773), publishing a handbook on collecting insects. Artwork from Nichols's 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858.
