18th century ice house restored in 2007 with National Lottery funds, Lydiard House Park, Lydiard Tregoze, Swindon, England

Ice was dug from the lake in winter and stored in the ice pit of the ice house between layers of salt and straw. It kept for up to two years and was used in the kitchens of the mansion house.
