. American engineer and railroad journal . Fig. 5- Consequentlv the difference of these ordinates represents theinterval which separates the ends of the crown bars from theirbrackets. This having been demonstrated, it is easy to deducefrom an examination of the cur 6 and 7. the course f the phenomena which occur during tin- expansion and tin-generation of a pressure in the boiler. As soon as the tire isstarted the crown sheet of the fire-box rises : the crown barsleave their brackets ; the interval which separates them in-. any deflection of the crown sheet- that is to say. there is neverany negative variation. In the mean time, the brackets follow-ing the variations of the temperatures of the mass of water onthat of the fire-box rise slowly and gradually. The intervalwhich separates the ends of the crown bars diminishes fromthe time the pressure reaches 1 kg. per square centimeter( lbs. per square inch), and at a pressure of 9 kgs. the brackets and ends of the crown bars come together, and from this time on the contact established remains test was only carried on until a pressure of 1! .lbs. 1 was reached. The fire was then drawn and the coolingof the boiler watched. The variations of the fire-box and ofthe outer shell were observed at decreasing pressures. Thevariations measured were exactly the same as before for thefire box and shell. Conclusions.—Tbe conclusions which can be deduced fromthis experiment for boilers of a type similar to the one exam-ined are as follow- : 1. On starting
