EXPLANATION It is the purpose of this Chart to show The; Distribution of theRACES OF Mankind, on the theory that they have all proceeded from acommon source. That source is indicated by the heavy black line at the left,marked Original Stock of Mankind. From this original stock severalgreat divisions branch off, the first of which is the stem of the prehistoricBlack races ; the second, the stem of the prehistoric Brown, or Mongoloid,races ; and the third, the stem of the prehistoric Ruddy, or White, of these stems divides into many branches. In general, the latitude of the given race is indicated in the Chart as onan ordinary map ; that is, those races having the most northernly distribu-tion are above ; those in the temperate zones come next, as nearly as prac-ticable ; and those in the tropical regions fall in the center or lower part ofthe Chart.
