The main characteristic of most of these walls of theearly period was simplicity; but it would be a great mistaketo consider them devoid of interest, for, as we shall see, theywere abundantly relieved. In small rooms they are particu-larly valuable as adding to the effect of space; and plain ornearly plain walls are from choice often employed by eminentdecorators in schemes of otherwise considerable elaboration.
