Map of the Moon by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), published in 1654 in Selenographia, sive Lunae descriptio (Selenography, or A Description of The Moon). The map shows libration (the oscillation of the visible surface of the Moon), and lunar craters and maria. The corners show cherubs with banners and using astronomical instruments. The title, author and year is at upper left. A biblical quote is at upper right. Two distance scales are at lower right and lower left. Markings for a co-ordinate system are round the rim of the Moon. This map was the standard work in selenography for the next hundred years.
