The small church of San Martino now stand-ing, was formerly only the chapel of the largerchurch which was built and presented to themonks of the Badia, or Abbey, as the Bene-dictines were called—by the Countess early came here from Cluny, and laterothers came from Monte Casino, near Naples. St. Benedict was born in the year 480, so wewe see that Florence, though so wondrouslyaroused and stimulated into new life and enthu-siasm and religious fervor by the coming of theFranciscans and Dominicans in the years 1212 24. That office was established by the Republicin 1199. There were even then, many wealthy,influential families in Florence, not the least ofwhich were the Medici, and to prevent the pos-sibility of any one of them predominating, alaw was passed that a foreigner must be chosenas Podesta—a title which expresses potency,magistracy, from the latin form, potestas—power.
