Abdominal muscles. Computer artwork of the rectus abdominis muscles (centre) and the transverse abdominis muscles (right and left). The rectus abdominis muscles run down the middle of the abdomen and are attached to the ribs and pelvis. They stabilise the lumbar (lower) spine, assist with exhalation and act to flex the lumbar spine. The transverse abdominis muscles attached to the centre of the rectus abdominis, the pelvic bone and the ribs. They stabilise the pelvis and chest.
