She was therefore referred to the radiographer when the true con-dition, as shown in Fig. 264. was revealed. The necessity for removingthe displaced second molar, as well as the odontoma, presented a situationwhich was not a pleasing one to contemplate. The patient, as well as herfriends, were informed of the probability of fracturing the mandible inthe endeavor to remove the molar and the dental tumor, which together ♦Barrett Oral Pathology and Practin THE USES OF THE RADIOGRAPH IN DENTISTRY 229. Under a general anesthetic of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which wasfollowed by ether, the tumor was removed, as was also the impacted molar, without any great difficulty, but when the circumscribed bony structureabout the molar was drilled and chiseled sufficiently to permit of an ele-vator passing under one corner of it and pressure applied, the expectedhappened, and a break in the body of the mandible occurred. This acci-dent was of no serious consequence, however, for under an occipito-mental bandage, which a few days later was reinforced by wire fixation, the fracture healed and the case proceeded to an uneventful and speedyrecovery, with complete restoration of health. The odontoma was ofcomposite structure, the central part being made up of what may havebeen the third molar, about which were arranged
