The Dusi Canoe Marathon. It is a boat race between the South African cities Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Conceptualised around a campfire during WW II, by the famous conservationist, the late Dr Ian Player. The event is about 120 km long and run over 3 days. Starting on the uMsundusi river and finishing on the uMgeni river in Durban. Of late, over 1000 paddlers start the event annually. 2019 saw 551 finish. It is the biggest canoeing race on the African continent. Onus is on competitors to learn the route and lines down rapids and weirs. The Dusi, has numerous portages.
