In common with thepresent experiment on the Erie canal, the motors are notto be put on the canal boats but are to run on elevatedtracks along the towpath. The Cawley system has twoelevated tracks with the motors suspended on the lower track go in one direction and those onthe upper the other. There is no interference with boatsgoing in the other direction or with the mule motors onthe towpath. The locomotives grip the rails from aboveand below and a great amount of traction can be obtainedfrom a very light machine. The locomotive can becontrolled from the boat so that the cost is reduced to aminimum. PITTSBURG PAYS PROFITS.
