In this way we hadbut brief ghmpses of the valley or of its clear little lakes, whose limpidemerald-green waters are never clouded by the continually droppingstones. They are surrounded by high ice-banks hanging down indazzling white stalactites and undermined by melting. The turretsof the northern vallev wall made a wonderful background for the scene. CliH|)tLr \. After over an hours march we reached a marginal hike some200 yards long and from 5 to 10 yards wide, which fills up the gapbetween the glacier and the rock. It appeared to be confined by anice-dam of no great thickness or strength. If this slight barrier hadgiven way before the pressure of the waters or the motion of the glacier. THE LILIliO GLVCIER our camping ground of the night before would have proved a dangerousone indeed. It is certainly far more prudent to encamp upon the glacierrather than in these lateral ravines. The Workmans upon the Hisparwitnessed more than one vast and violent flood caused by the breakingof glacial reservoirs ; and LongstafE came near losing his camp by thesame cause on the margin of the Rgyong glacier.
