The father of the ladybeing a jovial country gentleman and a royalist, the residence of her husbandso offended the bride, that in less than a month, under the pretence of a visit,she left him, and remained for the rest of the summer with her parents. Miltonbecame incensed, and regarding her conduct as a desertion of the marriagecontract, he sought to punish it by repudiation; and to this is to be attributedhis treatises on the subject of Divorce. His wifes friends, however, broughtabout a reconciliation. He continued an ardent champion for the republicanparty, even after the execution of Charles I., which he vindicated in his Ten-ure of Kings and Magistrates; but he has been charged with not being disin- 200 JOHN John terested in this, as the parliament crave him one thousand pounds and soonafterward nominated him Latin secretary to the new council of state. He alsowrote with great severity against the kings book of prayers and meditations,entitled Icon Basilike. The treatise of Milton was called Iconoclastes, orthe Image-Breaker; in which he censured the king for having made use ofa prayer taken from Sidneys Arcadia. He was next employed to answerthe treatise of Salmasius, entitled Defensio Regia, or a Defence of the lateKing. The reply of Milton had for its title Defensio pro Populo Anglicano ;and it was observed by Hobbes, in regard to the two disputants, that he didnot know whose style was best, or whose arguments were wor
