Australian wildfire scar, infrared satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is red, burned areas are dark green (upper left), water is black-blue, and urban areas are blue-grey. The scar is from more than 100 wildfires that occurred here in October 2013. The largest was the Hall Road fire. Part of the town of Wollongong, NSW, Australia, is at lower right. The three large lakes are (from lower left to upper right): Lake Avon, Lake Cordeaux, and Lake Cataract. This area is 33 by 39 kilometres. Image data obtained on 14 November 2013 by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite.
