Located on the Stavanger Peninsula in Southwest Norway, Stavanger counts its official founding year as 1125, the year the Stavanger Cathedral was completed. But now it is bristling with high-tech nautical, oil and defence industries. In particular, it is regarded as NorwayÕs oil capital. Stavanger Cathedral is Norway's oldest. Bishop Reinald, who may have come from Winchester, is said to have started construction of the Cathedral around 1100. The Cathedral was consecrated to Swithin as its patron saint. Its interior - shown here - is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic, although the (temporary) stained glass window is modern.
