Pongal or Sankranthi is the Hindu harvest festival. Farmers in rural India especially celebrate. People buy sugar cane and use it as offerings to Surya the sun god to thank for the harvest. Cows are decorated, their horns painted and are given the day off. They are fed Pongal a special dish to celebrate this day. In this image a cow is paraded around the village being worshipped by villagers and farmers before being taken to the temple to be blessed.
