Theepiglottis is liable to suffer from syphilitic ulceration, by an exten-sion of the disease from the fauces : it very rarely passes beyondto the larynx and trachea. In small-pox and other eruptive fevers, the peculiar poison of the disease often sets up its action in thefauces and the respiratory passages; the former may give rise topustules on the glottis, accompanied by a more or less rednessand serous infiltration ; in the latter ulcerative destruction andoodematous swellins; Acute ulceration of the epiglottis and surround-ing parts in a man, caused by taking a large doseof bichloiide of mercury. Death followed afternine days; there were pneumonia, ulceration ofthe stomach, and inflammation of the entire in-testinal tract. THE LARYNX. The surface is broken only by the minute follicles which openupon it. In congestive and inflammatory states this vascular networkbecomes much distended; the membrane is rendered thick and softby mere repletion in the first instance, and subsequently by inter-stitial effusion.
