English banana winter insulation in

A large banana plant in a Buckinghamshire front garden prior to wrapping in insulation for winter protection. The leaves of this tropical plant will not be cut off at the base but folded down to give the trunks extra protection. As on previous years, I expect the leaves to succumb to the frost and be blackened and soft - but the centre of the trunks should remain viable for growth next year. There are four trunks in this group - all will be wrapped as one with bubble-wrap, perforated for ventilation, with a large waterproof bag over the very top, followed by some purpose-made breathable winter fleece bags. (see further images.) Weather permitting, the winter protection will be removed early next May, the banana cleaned up and ready to go!
