John S. McCalmont and James L. Connelly also RobertLamberton, were Judges of Venango County. Samuel , who was born in 1823, was a prominent memberof the Bar and an ardent advocate of Prohibition, was alsoa member of the Legislature. He was a cousin of GeneralAlfred McCalmont. Sometime in 1804, Rev. Andrew Hemphill with WilliamConnelly as guide, travelled from Titusville to Franklinalong the old Trail holding religious meetings and organ-izing classes at Pithole, Pioneer, Franklin and other riversettlements; the Dawsons, Kinnears, Siggins, Greggs, and. OLD BLOCK HOUSE. Other Families 37 others were among the attendants at these meetings. Alden came to Western Pennsylvania in 1815 andbecame the first President of Meadville College. He wasalso missionary to the Indians. Alden and Levi Dodd andJohn Martin, William Parker, William Raymond, NancyKinnear, who married William Raymond, and Robert Mc-Calmont were all instrumental in organizing and conduct-ing a Union Sunday School. The first one started in Ven-ango County was about 1824. The first newspaper wasedited and published by Alexander McCalmont and JohnEvans. 38 SlGGINS AND SIGGINS GENEALOGY.
