Edmond Halley (1656-1742), English Astronomer Royal. Portrait of the physicist Edmond Halley whose work on the parabolic orbits of comets led him to deduce that events from 1531, 1607 and 1682 were in fact the same comet. He correctly predicted its return in 1758 and it was subsequently named after him. In 1716 he devised a method for calculating the Earth-Sun distance from observations of transits of Venus. In 1720 he was made Astronomer Royal. Taken from a book published in 1849.
