Mars Science Laboratory instrument. This is the top of the remote sensing mast on the Mars Science Laboratory's (MSL) rover, Curiosity. The round window in the white box is part of the ChemCam instrument for remote analysis of soil. The two square openings below the white box are the Mastcam cameras, which can take high definition video and use filters to study rocks at specific wavelengths. Outside of each Mastcam camera are the lenses (round) and back-up lenses for the stereo navigation camera. The MSL is due for launch at the end of November 2011 and to land on Mars in August 2012 on a mission to determine if Mars is, or was ever, able to support microbial life.
