7up, Coca Cola and Greek script. Greek Cypriots began to build Varosia as a suburb of Famagusta in the early 1950s. The district of Varosha (Kapalı Maraş) in Famagusta (Cyprus) was between 1970 and 1974 one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Its Greek Cypriot inhabitants fled during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, when the city of Famagusta came under Turkish control. It has remained abandoned ever since and the buildings have decayed.
