This arrangement of stars has been used in the UnitedStates Navy boat-flag for many years and has recently beenreaffirmed by Executive Order. The five-pointed star, with onepoint upward, is an ancient symbol of authority and dominion ofIndia, Persia, and Egypt. It is a sacred symbol in Christianchurches, and symbolizes dominion. It has a special significanceand interest as a symbol of Freemasonry, of which order Wash-ington, Franklin, Ross, and nearly all of the signers of the Decla-ration of Independence, were eminent AMERICAN FLAG OF REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD, ACCORDINGTO PEALE AND TRUMBULL Peale and Trumbull have painted the flag of the RevolutionaryWar period with thirteen five-pointed stars in a circle. The flagof the Third Maryland Regiment, preserved in the State House,Annapolis, Maryland, has in the Union twelve white five-pointed From Washington to Wilson stars in the circumference and one star in the center of a standard is 32 x 60 inches. It was carried in the Battle ofthe Cowpens, January 17, 1781.
