Yamashita Quarter, Ueno (Ueno Yamashita) From the Series One hundred Views of Edo, Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858, Woodblock print in colored ink on paper, The buildings and landscapes in this print are replicas from sites in Kyoto, to legitimize the “new” capital of Edo. Throughout the print, Hiroshige adds details which balance each other out, for example, the red balcony of the Kiyomizudera temple is a bold contrast to the light pink blossoms and light hue of blue of Shinobazu Pond. The tall and lanky pine trees also counteract the bushy and blooming blossoms
