Alexander was awarethat it would be impossilile for him to com-plete his causeway, or take the city so longas the Tyrians remained masters of the he collected his few ships to-gether, and having received other vesselsfrom his allies, he came to anchor with hiswhole fleet along the shore near the mole,which liis soldiers were rebuilding, where hisgalleys rode in safety. At thesame time Alexander ordered the command-ers to surround the city with their Tyrians, on their side, also made prepa-rations for a vigorous defense. On the sideof the city which lay toward the causeway,they erected stone towers of great height,and of a proportionate breadth.
