In 1876 he was the nomineeof his party for representative in the State Legis-lature, to which he was elected the same year, andserved with ability in that body during the sessionsof 1877 and 1878, having been a member of thecommittees on Pensions and Gratuities, GeologicalSurvey, Labor and Industry, Corporations andCounties and Townships. In his younger and moreactive public life Dr. Hines was influential in politics,and to-day his advice and counsel are often soughtin party matters. As a Freemason he has beenactive in fraternity matters, holding membership inGreat Bend Lodge No. 338, and Chapter No. 210,R. A. M., and Commandery No. 27, K.
