The sculpted figure at left is Hammurabi, standing before Shamash, the sun god and "Lord of Judgment." The king's hand is raised in worship as Shamash gives him the laws, which are recorded on the surface below. This shining black diorite stele, known today as the "Hammurabi Stele," was uncovered in 1901 on the acropolis of ancient Susa in present-day Iran. Hammurabi was ruler of Babylon from 1792 to 1750 and is known for the set of laws called Hammurabi's Code, one of the first written law codes, that were inscribed below the figures of Hammurabi and Shamash, The stele measure more than 8 feet in height.
