Productive farming . ng ripe tooearly, the fruits remain very smalland are green much too long.(See Fig. 146.) The diseasedtrees should be burned as in thecase of jellows. Apple Scab.—This disease ofthe apple is very bad in nearlyall regions where the crop isgrown for market. It is verysimilar to the scab disease foundon pears. It attacks both leavesand fruit. This disease appears atblossom time and soon after, caus-ing large numbers of the smallapples to drop from the fruits that cling on may be-come affected and will be small, irregular, rough, and , roughened, brownspots, more or less running together, are formed on the sur-face of the apple. The roughened or scabby area may coverall one side of the apple and even cause it to crack. It is fromthis scabby appearance that the disease takes its commonname. The disease on the leaves causes sooty spots on theunder side. Later these leaves become yellow and drop fromthe tree, in severe cases taking most of the leaves fromthe Fig. 143.—Time for first sum-mer spray on peach and plum, asthe calyx is being shed from youngfruit.
