Hecanie to Pittsfield, and, having been an apprentice in the carriage busi-ness from the age of seventeen, became the foreman of L. Pomeroysmanufactorv and remained with him for six years. In 1810 he beganbusiness for himself, and in 1840^ associated his son Edwin with himunder the firm name of Jason Clapp & Son.
