Thallium (Tl). Diagram of the nuclear composition, electron configuration, chemical data, and valence orbitals of an atom of thallium-204 (atomic number: 81), an isotope of this element. The nucleus consists of 81 protons (red) and 123 neutrons (orange). 81 electrons (white) successively occupy available electron shells (rings). The stability of an element's outer (valence) electrons determines its chemical and physical properties. Thallium is a post-transition metal in group 13, period 6, and the p-block of the periodic table. It has a melting point of 304 degrees Celsius. Highly toxic, it is used in the electronics, pharmaceutical and glass industries.
