A view of Mametz Wood on the Somme battlefield as it is today. In July 1916 it was the subject of intense and costly fighting between the 36th Welsh Division, much of it hand to hand. Both Robert Graves (Captain) and Siegfried Sassoon (Lieutenant) were in the Welsh Division and saw action in Mametz wood and immortalised it in their memoirs and their poetry.
