Position of leaves.—The large leaves, divided tothe base into seven lobes and borne on peduncleswhich are often nine inches or more in length, areranged in opposite pairs as in the ash. Hence thebranches which arise from their axillary buds arein opposite pairs also, at least when all the axillary internodes, varyinglength.
