This room has a flooring of liard-wood. which has been waxed and varnished and numerous rugs arclaid here and there, giving it a very cozy appearance. The furni-ture is all antique oak and the whole effect is very pleasing to theeye. Some time since mention was made of an electric freight carwhich was to be put in commission on the Ensley and Pratt Citydivision. This car is 48 ft. long, 16 ft. high and ft. wide and i^equipped with a Christenson air brake and whistle and the General. Electric Cos. four motor equipment. It bears in silver letters onthe side the word Alfred in honor of Col. Alfred M. Shook, tlieformer president of the company through whose , this car was built. The trial trip was made on the morn-ing of Oct. :7th with Col. Shook, Messrs. J. B. McCIary, managerof the railway department, G. H. Harris, superintendent of equip-ment and N. Morrison, train master Ensley division, on trip was highly satisfactory and the Alfred proved itself wellworthy of its name. It makes three trips daily between Ensley andBirmingham and pulls six and eight cars. It was found to be detrimental to passenger cars to use them foi-hauling material for construction work, so a flat car was equippedwith motors of the G. E. 1000 type, a ridge pole put on it and it wasturned out of the companys shops a full construction car. Several months ago a petition was filed with the city council re-questing a franchise for
