The crew - FLIGHT LIEUTENANT LITHUNE [pilot] of Glanynant, Fairwater, Cardiff, and FLIGHT LIEUTENANT CUMBERS [navigator] of 7 Cromar Road, southend- on-Sea, Essex, ditched their aircraft after they had lost 200 gallons of petrol owing to aleak. The Beaufighter came down in the sea three miles off shore and six miles from Cape The men were picked up by Portuguese fishermen, who gave them a warm welcome and food at Port Imao, the whole town turned out to welcome the pair. They were treated as honoured guests, and when it was discovered that they could be treated as "shipwrecked mariners" and not interned arrangements were made for them to be flown from Lisbon to England.
