The Bridge at Chesterfield, North Anna, Virginia. Photography played a role in several respects during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The portraits of southerners, northerners, generals and President Lincoln sold quickly and in large quantities. In 1866 Gardner made the Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War, a remarkable chronicle in which he reported on the conflict. He also included this photograph taken by his assistant O’Sullivan.
