Comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791), French politician, born Honore Gabriel Riqueti. 19th-century illustration of an orator, in the form of the Comte de Mirabeau, as described in the theories of Swiss theologist Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801). Mirabeau's early life included romantic scandals, extravagant tastes, and periods of exile and imprisonment. His writings included political treatises. After the French Revolution in 1789, he was a leading moderate voice on the National Assembly. Lavater is best known for popularising the pseudoscience of physiognomy, the practice of assessing personality traits from the appearance of a person's face. He published his work in 'Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beforderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe' (1775-1778). This artwork was published in 1844.
