Topografia geometrica dell' Agro romano ..., 1692, between 1692 and 1704. Cingolani, Giovanni Battista, cartographer. l'anno MDCLXXXXII [1692, between 1692 and 1704] Cadastral map of the area around Rome, drawn by the surveyor Cingolani. First published 1692 by Matteo Gregorio de Rossi, with Cingolani's dedication to Pope Innocent XII. Reissued 1704 by Domenico de Rossi, with dedication by Domenico's son Lorenzo Filippo to Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. See Frutaz, who does not mention an ed. by Fulvio Paluzzi. Imprint on segment III of present map iincludes date 1692, retained from ed. of Matteo Gregorio de Rossi, though publisher's name has been changed to Fulvio Paluzzo. Segment I includes dedication to Ruscoli which appears in ed. of 1704. The present map may be an assembled copy, with a copy of panel I bearing the later dedication inserted in an earlier reprint ed. unknown to Frutaz. The 6 sheets of paper seem uniform, however, all with watermark of a fleur-de-lys within double circle. Alternatively the present map may be from a later intermediate ed., perhaps published while the 1704 ed. was in preparation and the dedication had already been changed, but the publication date for some reason had not. The plates as preserved in the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica bear Domenico de Rossi's name as publisher, so Paluzzi's ed. almost certainly preceded that of 1704; see: Grelle Iusco, A. Indice delle stampe de Rossi, p. 378. Panels numbered I-VI at upper left. They were meant to be assembled in two rows of three, one row above the other. Dedication at upper left of panel I, on a mantle held by two female allegories beneath Ruspoli's coat of arms. Title and imprint on tablet at upper right of panel III. Mediterranean Sea at lower margin of panels IV-VI, with 3 ships and Neptune's chariot drawn by sea horses. Allegorical putto on panel IV, bearded man on panel VI. Relief shown pictorially. Buildings, hills and trees shown in elevation. Oriented with nor
