Cushion bog. Bogs like this contain many plant species such as Sphagnum moss and form an anaerobic zone beneath the water which promotes peat formation. This bog was photographed in the Ecuadorean paramo. The paramo is a distinct ecosystem that covers the upper parts of the northern Andes, encompassing parts of Venezuela, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador. The isolated and fragmented occurrence of the paramo over the Andean highlands promotes high speciation and an exceptionally high number of endemic plants.
