Buildings in the historic center of Lübeck, Germany

Lübeck is a city in northern Germany notable for its Gothic-style brick architecture, which dates back to its time as the medieval capital of a powerful trading confederation called the Hanseatic League. Its most emblematic building is the Holsten Gate (Holstentor), erected to protect the old quarter (Altstadt). Rebuilt after the Second World War, the Marienkirche is a 13th-14th century church that greatly influenced the design of the rest of the churches in northern Europe.
