Sgt. Jack Abbott, a photographer for the American military during World War One, captured this photograph on November 21, 1918. The image shows a bombardment carried out by a regiment of trench artillery in Vitrey, Meurthe et Moselle, France. Shell fragments were scattered around the area, making it hazardous to be within 500 meters of the bursting shells.
