Y., May 6, 1809, third son of Ly-man and Roxana (Foote) entered Yale college in hisfifteenth year, and was graduatedin the class of 1838. He studiedfor the ministry in the Yale di-vinity school, under the of Dr. Nathaniel W. Tay-lor, of whom he was an ardentadmirer and devoted friend. In1832 he went with his Lyman Beecher, then the president of Lanetheological seminary, to Cincin-nati, 6. A little later, after anexciting contest over his case,between the advocates of theold and the new school viewsin theology, he was licensed topreach the gospel by the Pres-bytery of Cmcinnati. His firstcharge was at Batavia, O., his second in Rochester,N. Y., and his third in Chillicothe, O. He was anenthusiastic lover of music, poetry, and the naturalsciences, a devoted pastor and an inspiring married Sarah Sturges Buckingham, of Zanes-ville, O., July 13, 1837.
