Anasazi cliff dwellings in Mummy Cave in the sandstone wall of Canyon del Muerto (Canyon of the Dead), Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona. Evidence of continuous habitation at the site from AD300-1300. Mesa Verde type masonry rooms on the central ledge were built later (c 1284) than those in the alcoves to E & W. The cave & canyon were named after two mummies in cists found in the late 1880s eroding from the talus slope below the cave.
