On his returnto Virginia the young man was intrusted withthe management of the private aflfairs of thefamily, as his father, who was a mem-ber of the house of burgesses was en-gaged at the time in negotiating atreaty with the Indian tribes. In1776 Henry Lee received an appoint-ment as captain of cavalry under Bland, but it was not untilSeptember of the following year thathe joined the main army. There hisskill, his discipline and his manly andsoldier-like bearing attracted the no-tice of the commander-in-chief, andhe was soon promoted to the rank ofmajor and given the command of aseparate cavalry corps, which, whenocmpleted, included three companiesof horse and was known as LeesLegion.
