Immediately below the armature room and extendingthe length of the building, is the machine shop, wherewheel presses, lathes, drill presses, screw cutting machm-ery, millers and other appliances for rough or fine workare found. An old water-proof, Thomson-Houston,50-horse-power double reduction motor is installed hereas the motive power and faithfully fulfills its MICHIGAN STREET I!R1D(;E AIMROACH. Forges and anvils, together with a rail bender, enable thecompany to do all its own smith work and crossing andswitch work, besides general repairs. Next to the machine shop on the north is a boilerroom of 30 by 30 feet, containing three boilers, whichwill later do service for the plant. A store room forunderground supplies is also found here, and great coilsof submarine cable, Edison tubing and cables give theroom a Jules Verne appearance, intensified by the dim,religious light from the basement windows.
