In 1858 the philosopher, Schaaf-hausen, gave to the public an account ofthe discoveries recently made in thelimestone cavern of Neanderthal, be-tween Dtisseldorf and Elberfeld, includ-ing a description of one of the most re-markable prehistoric skulls which schol-ars have had the fortune to examine. Nopublished account of the results, how-. and described by William Boyd the naturalist, Goodwin-Austen, had reexamined the cavern ofipag; Kents Hole, andgiven the resultsin a memoir tothe Geological So-ciety. In 1858Dr. Falconer in-formed the samelearned body ofthe interestingdiscoveries madeby himself in acave dwelling atBrixham, also inDevonshire; andafterward a Pro-f e s s o r Ramsayexplored thegrotto and veri-fied the formerconclusions re-specting its con-tents. Explorationswere next carriedinto distant the grotto ofMaccagnone, inSicily, Dr. Fal-coner made dis-coveries in thesame general linewith those alreadyrecorded.
