View, end of Costanera Promenade, of hillside homes above beach with fishermen drying black seaweed, Ancud, Chiloe Island, Chile

Locals collect and lay out seaweed to dry along the coast of Chiloe Island. Some is eaten as a local delicacy. Some is farmed for the production of agar-agar, a gelatinous substance used as an emulsifying or thickening agent in the food and cosmetics industries. Seaweed has been an important 'cash crop' in Chile since 1959. The industry employs some 3000 fishermen. Japan is an important export market. Here we see fishermen drying seaweed on the beach at the end of Ancud Costanera or waterfront promenade, where the road rises and turns towards Quetalmahue.
