After awhile the hare settleddown on the ground, while its enemy crept closer and closer, until it sprang onits victims neck, killing it with a single bite. The hare is by no means a cow-ard, often fighting fiercely against animals larger than itself, but with the stoat itseems unable to help itself. The effect that the stoat has on birds, hares, andrabbits is a kind of fascination like that of a STOAT. THE SKUNK. Everyone knows the Skunk, with its beautiful black and white fur, andthe terrible name it has for the smell which issues from its body. The glandswhich contain this disagreeable liquid in many cases have been removed,leaving the skunk, which is naturally good-tempered, a jolly little skunk is easily tamed, and will live contentedly about a garden. THE SKUNK. ? iSiii In a Western double-framed house a family of skunks lived between theouter and inner shells of the wall, and as night came on they were to be heardrunning over the beams after prey. They destroyed every living thing, fromrats down to blackbeetles, and were never offensive to the household unlesssuddenly disturbed by one of the cats. As a matter of fact, the skunks hadtheir own way, and the cats, with great wisdom, kept at a distance. Neverthe-less, there was a collision at times, and the skunk made the neighborhoodaware of it.
