After much partybacking and filling, and long negotiation, a treaty was agreedupon, June 15, 1846, which was ratified by the Senate, theWhigs coming to the rescue of the President, saving him fromhis party friends and the country from war. The treaty fixed49° N. lat. as the boundary, as originally proposed by necessitated an immense cession of land—all between thesouthern limit claimed by Great Britain and the 49°—to theUnited States.
