First public traffic on the Captain Cook Bridge, Brisbane, 13. Construction of the Captain Cook Bridge commenced in 1968 and was completed in 1972. The main span of 183 metres was the precast prestressed concrete free-cantilever bridge for 3 months until it was overtaken by the Harada Bridge in Japan.
