Hesse. True-colour satellite image of Hesse (or Hessen, highlighted), one of Germany's 16 states (Lander). North is at top. Urban areas such as Frankfurt (lower centre) and Kassel (top right) appear grey. Forests are dark green, grazing lands are light green and crops are mostly yellow. Bare ground appears pale yellow, pale brown, or almost white. Image taken by the American Landsat- 5 satellite. The smallest visible features are about 30 metres across.
